137/365: Firefly, Avatar (not that one), and other awesome things I was convinced I'd hate

I thought of this because of a resurgence of interest in Star Trek: The Original Series (nothing like loaning out your DVDs to make you want to watch them again) which I had absolutely no interest in until the new Star Trek movie was released in 2009. Until then (like a loyal Star Wars fan--which I still am by the way) I was convinced that Star Trek sucked. Then I gave it a try and I got hooked. I would at this point link you to my reviews of the series and 2009 film but I can't figure out how to do that from my phone. Nevermind, figured it out and linked them--I am a wizard.

Ok, moving on...all of the things in this list are things I had no interest in and was convinced I would hate only to give them a try and discover I liked them. If you're reading my descriptions and feel the same way I'm gonna encourage you to keep an open mind...and possibly rethink other stuff you've just dismissed out of hand in the past. Alright, here we go:

1. Firefly/Serenity: Firefly is a TV show that Jeremy loves and made me watch in college. It was cancelled after one season so there's only like a total of 20ish episodes. Honestly, I thought it was the dumbest series ever...until I got about 4 episodes in. Then I realized that I really did want to find out what was gonna happen to the characters--and that's the key element, the characters are great. Much like Star Trek, the sci-fi elements are just trappings surrounding the characters' relationships and interactions. Check it out--I think the Science Channel is running it in syndication right now.

2. Avatar: The Last Airbender: This one's all Bob's fault. When he came to live with me in the spring of 2009 he brought along all 3 seasons of Avatar. At first I watched them out of politeness...after all, it's a kids cartoon, how compelling can it be? Answer: very. This series is great--dramatic and funny--it's got something for everyone. The themes of honor, duty, friendship, and love are universal and totally relatable. I love Zuko and Iro. If you get a chance to catch it on Nickelodeon totally do it. Even better, Netflix it and watch the episodes in order.

3. World of Warcraft: If you haven't heard of WoW you must have lived under a rock for the last 5 years. I was not at all interested in it initially but totally got into after Jeremy convinced me to try it out. In truth, if I didn't have a house and kid I would still be playing it...I got totally addicted. WoW is awesome but treat it with caution as it is the ultimate time suck. No lie.

So that's all I can think of for today--plenty of material for you to get started on. If I think of more I'll do an updated post later. Oh and just for funsies...2 things I will never get into:

1. Reality TV: Just can't do it. Tried. Can't

2. Twilight: I refuse. Vampires that play baseball? Really? I just plain refuse.

136/365: It's like trying to hit a bullet with a smaller bullet whilst wearing a blindfold riding a horse

Seriously, dressing my child should not be this difficult. I'm pretty sure. Also, we seriously need a baby manicurists. Child has got my thick, quick-growing nails and I just suck at keeping them cut.

I've got a fun post percolating that will hopefully happen tomorrow...so stay tuned! And no, it's not about constipation--I know you're disappointed.

135/365: My Valentines

My valentines from Coraline and Jeremy (yay Wall-E!). And, of course, Cora looking cute :-)

134/365: Sonnet 116

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no! It is an ever fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose Worth's unknown, although his height be taken.

Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass cone;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom:
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

133/365: In a funk? Why not buy all new furniture? Umm...ok.

Ok so we didn't buy all new furniture...but we still got some good stuff. I figure it this way: we had to get a kitchen table because the old one went to brother-in-law so why not go whole hog and get the matching bench for one side (seating for up to 6!), and then since we're there already why not get that small desk for the kitchen we've been wanting and those couple of chairs for the living room we always meant to buy (because hey, what's stopping you?). Done, done, and done. We have now rearranged the living room so that the TV is off to the side instead of front-and-center and our 2 new chairs will go across from the couch (pictures to come at a later date).

I am super stoked about the kitchen table--I think it'll be really durable and it's oak colored so I don't think it'll show wear as much as cherry, espresso, or black would. This is very important since we intend to eat dinner at it every night. I think having the bench will be pretty cool too b/c if we aren't using it it'll be easy to slide out if the way & then if peeps come over...blam! two more places at the table.

Best part of the furniture? It was all on sale or clearance due to President's Day plus we got 2 years no interest financing. I love buying things that you don't actually have to pay for immediately.
